Drawings by Julia Clift

April 14th - May 28th 2018
Over five years in the making, Woman Drawings strives toward an honest and inclusive representation of women today. Mainstream images that objectify women and imply body-standards are all too common. Woman Drawings endeavors to confront this normalized visual culture by positioning women as self-possessed subjects. For Julia, the painstaking process of pencil drawing is a means of paying homage to each unique body. The models, friends and acquaintances, each posed during an individual photo session in Julia's studio. From the photos, she selected references for the drawings that, in her eyes, reflected strength, beauty, and psychological complexity. Ultimately, this series led her down a path marked by difficult questions around empowerment, liberation, and artistic responsibility. For viewers, Julia hopes to provoke meaningful self-reflection and dialogue.
